11% Of Adults Volunteer In Sport

11% of adults in Northern Ireland volunteered in sports last year, according to a report by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL).

'Sports volunteering by adults in Northern Ireland' was published today and shows that a higher proportion of males (14%) than females (8%) were involved than sports volunteering in 2012/13.

Those living in the most deprived areas were less likely to have volunteered in sports in the last year (7%) than those living in any other area (12%).

The most frequently cited sports volunteering role was coaching (44%), followed by fundraising (39%), stewarding (23%), event management (20%) and officiating/refereeing (20%).

Just over one in every 20 (6%) had previously volunteered at a major sporting event, with a higher proportion of males (8%) than females (4%) having done so.

Those living in the most deprived areas were less likely to have volunteered at a major sports event (3%) than those living in any other area (7%).

Police fire shots in Antrim
Police have fired shots in Antrim as they intervened in an apparent eviction attempt in an estate. It is reported that four masked men had tried to evict a man from the Ballycraigy Estate in Antrim Town. The incident has been linked to row with the Loyalist Volunteer Force in the area.
