Illegal Waste Clean Up At L'Derry Recycling Site

The clean up operation of half a million tonnes of material illegally buried at a licensed recycling site has cost the government £800,000 to date.

The waste was uncovered at the recycling plant Campsie, L'Derry.

High risk refuse was removed by experts from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA), while the water quality in the area has been monitored over the last seven months ahead of consideration of a longer term solution.

The biggest part of the landfill was buried in old sand and gravel excavation pits across a 1,4 km site on Mobuoy Road near River Faugham.

The Environment Minister Mark H Durkan has been quoted as saying that the polluters would be pursued vigorously, with the aim of recovering the cost of the clean up.

The owner and operator of the site has had his licence revoked and a criminal investigation has been launched.
