Calls For Parade Inquiry

Unionist leaders have called for a legal inquiry into an ongoing issue surrounding parading in north Belfast.

The move follows a Parades Commission ruling that an Orange Order parade would not be allowed to march through a predominantly nationalist area of north Belfast twice on 12 July. An identical ruling last year led to police being attacked with golf balls, bricks, stones, bottles and paving slabs on 12 July by loyalists who arrived to protest the decision.

Following this year's decision, all unionist parties walked out of fresh talks aimed at resolving remaining contentious issues surrounding parading and flags in Northern Ireland.

The Orange Order has said bands across Northern Ireland will stop for several minutes in protest on 12 July, over the Ardoyne march decision.

The Order and unionist politicians have also signed a pledge calling for peaceful protests on the 12th.

The announcements were made at a press conference involving senior members of the Orange Order and unionist leaders including First Minister Peter Robinson and Ulster Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt.

Unionists said there would be a "graduated response" following the Parades Commission ruling.
