Ballymena Scrap Dealer Given £500k Confiscation Order

A Ballymena scrap metal dealer has been the subject of a £500,000 Confiscation Order for waste offences at Belfast Crown Court.

The move follows a previous court hearing in November 2013, in which Robert John Mulholland of Mulholland Scrap Metals Ltd, Maine Road, Shanksbridge, Ballymena admitted keeping, depositing and treating controlled waste without a licence.

He was previously sentenced to three months in jail, suspended for two years, for three offences under the Waste and Contaminated Land (NI) Order 1997.

The charges followed visits to the company’s site in 2010 and 2011 by officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. They found between 50% and 80% of the company's land covered in scrap metal, including cars and car parts. Officers also found fridges, bed springs, batteries and cans.

Between June 2010 and June 2011, just under 20,000 tonnes of waste was estimated to have been treated on the site with a minimum turnover estimated at about £3m.
