NI Missionary Nurse Shot In Congo
A missionary from Cookstown, Co Tyrone, is said to be recovering after she was shot and wounded in her home in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Maud Kells, 75, lives near the Mulita area where she works with mission agency WEC International. It is understood the incident at the weekend happened when "bandits" attacked her house.
She is thought to have been shot twice and wounded in the shoulder.
A motive for the shooting is unclear.
Ms Kells has worked in Africa since 1968. In this year's New Year Honours List, she was awarded an OBE. She initially worked as a missionary nurse, and has been involved in the training of Congolese nurses in five hospitals and 30 health centres. When she is not living and working in the Congo, she returns to her hometown of Cookstown.
