Escaped Prisoner Robbed Pharmacy Before Recapture

An escaped prisoner caught by the PSNI at a city centre bar robbed a pharmacy at knifepoint shortly before being recaptured.

53-year-old Derek Brockwell, escaped from Tallaght Hospital, after stabbing two prison officers.

Brockwell was recaptured outside a Wetherspoons pub in Belfast. Brockwell began stabbing himself in the abdomen the police approached him.

Police confirmed that prior to his arrest, Brockwell robbed the Urban Pharmacy on the Dublin Road, threatening staff with a knife.

Brockwell is currently being treated in hospital for self-inflicted wounds, and police said he will be questioned about the armed robbery as soon as he has been discharged.

Ambulance damaged in brick attack
A brick has been thrown through a window of an ambulance in Dunmurry. The incident happened at around 9.50pm on Wednesday. While the driver escaped injury, police condemned the attack saying it had the potential for more serious consequences. This is just the latest in a spate of attacks on ambulance crew in recent times.

Man dies in Magherafelt road collision
A man has died following a road traffic collision in Co Londonderry on Thursday. The accident, which occurred on the Castledawson Road in Magherafelt shortly before 6pm, involved a collision between a Peugeot car and a lorry. The deceased, who has not yet been named, was driving the Peugeot while the driver of the lorry escaped serious injury.

Home evacuated after possible racial attack
A number of people have had to evacuate their homes after a suspected pipe bomb was discovered outside a house in south Belfast this morning. Police believe the device, which was found outside the house in Coolfin Street shortly after 7.30am, is linked to racial attacks in the area. The device was later discovered to be a firework.

Fermanagh family targeted by petrol bombers
A family in Co Fermanagh has had a lucky escape after a petrol bomb was thrown into their home last night. At around 11pm, the petrol bomb was thrown through the living room window of the home in the predominantly nationalist Cornagrade estate in Enniskillen. The device, however, failed to ignite and there were no injuries.

Court appearance for attempted murder accused
A 41-year-old man charged with eight counts of attempted murder is expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court today. The charges relate to a shooting incident in Cooke Street, in the lower Ormeau Road area of south Belfast in July of this year.
