£6.3m Housing Scheme Complete In The Shankill Area

A new £6.3 million housing scheme has officially opened in the Shankill area of Belfast.

The 54 new homes are located on Battenberg Street, and a further 22 new homes are to be developed in the Lawnbrook area.

Social Development Minister, Mervyn Story, said: "These 54 much needed, new and modern, energy efficient homes will make a huge difference to those who live in them and indeed to the surrounding community.

"These homes are the first tranche of a mixed tenure development in the Lawnbrook Urban Renewal Area and I am pleased to be able to announce plans for a further 22 social and affordable houses also for the Shankill area. I expect construction to begin on these additional homes in the new financial year. These will help transform another derelict site into an area where people are proud to live."

DRD Minister Called To Clarify Fairy Sailings

Alliance Councillor Kellie Armstrong is calling on the Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy to clarify if the Strangford Ferry would be sailing as normal this Friday, despite Translink confirming all bus and trains would be cancelled.

Councillor Kellie Armstrong said: "This must be rectified immediately, giving commuters and parents of school children who rely on the service enough time to plan their travel alternatives.

"It is unacceptable that DRD is unable to provide any guidance as to if the Ferry will be running or not. All officials have been able to tell me so far is that there is no official information available and a press release may be issues by the Minister's office in a day or two.

"This Ferry is not just another form of public transport, but is a means of enabling Peninsula people to connect to the mainland, avoiding more than a 40-60 mile round trip, and the Minister's current stance is not being fair on them."

Development Proposal Approved For Future Expansion Of Holy Trinity College

A development proposal has been approved to increase the enrolment at Holy Trinity College, Cookstown.

It was proposed by the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS) to increase the school's approved enrolment to 1,300 pupils by 2025, including a phased increase in admissions over a three year period commencing September 2016.

Education Minister John O'Dowd said: "In January 2013 I announced that a major capital project for Holy Trinity College could be advanced in planning. This development proposal is linked to that process.

"On the basis of the evidence presented I am now able to confirm that the new school will cater for up to 1,300 pupils."
