Carpets International to axe 140 jobs

A leading UK textile company has announced it is to lay off 140 people at its two Northern Ireland factories.

Bradford-based Carpets International, which went into receivership last month, announced yesterday it was to make 92 redundancies in Killinchy and 48 at Donaghadee as part of a UK-wide redundancy scheme.

However this figure is far short of what was predicted last month when the company revealed that up to 430 jobs could go because of heavy competition from imports and falling demand in the UK.

In a statement on Monday, the receivers, PricewaterhouseCoopers, said the company's order book and financial position could "no longer support existing manning levels".

Britain's largest carpet manufacturer, Carpets International trades under the Kosset, Wilton Royal and Abingdon brands.

The company acquired its Killinchy operation from Northern Ireland Spinners in 1999 while the Donaghadee factory was purchased under the CV Carpets acquisition by Shaw Industries in 1985.
