Carpets International announce 160 job cuts
Northern Ireland textiles firm, Carpets International have announced that around 160 jobs are to go at its plants in Killinchy and Donaghadee.
The announcement was made on Wednesday after the company went into receivership last month.
The firm's Killinchy plant will close on Friday with the loss of 55 jobs, while more than 100 workers are to lose their jobs in Donaghadee. The remaining 120 jobs at Donaghadee are being kept on at the moment however they are expected to go when the factory closes in a couple of weeks' time.
Responding to the news Alliance Deputy Leader and former North Down Assembly member Eileen Bell said: "I am very disappointed for the workers, but I would hope that the ongoing negotiations with the two prospective buyers will produce a favourable result and possible reemployment for at least some of the workers.
"I have been assured by the receivers that all workers will be properly dealt with regarding pensions and so on."
The redundancies were part of an overall redundancies scheme in which 300 employees lost their jobs across the UK.

HMRC Announce Automatic Child Benefit Increase
Millions of families who claim Child Benefit will automatically receive increased payments from 6 April 2024, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has confirmed. Families with one child will now receive up to £1,331 a year – an annual increase of £83.20, and up to £881 a year per additional child – an annual increase of £54.60.
