Green Party Calls For Animal Cruelty Register

The Green Party is calling for an animal cruelty register after it was revealed the man responsible for the attack on Cody the border collie was freed from prison.

Cody was doused in fuel and set on fire.

East Belfast Councillor Ross Brown said he was "angered" by the experience Cody and the Agnew family suffered.

Mr Brown said: "This was a barbaric act of cruelty on an innocent family pet by Andrew Stewart, who showed little remorse.

"Although this was the first time that a custodial sentence was imposed under animal cruelty legislation, 10 months in custody was hardly befitting of the severity of the cruelty and anguish inflicted on the Agnew family.

"I believe the law on animal cruelty is far from adequate, and the Green Party will continue to work to ensure that Cody's death was not in vain.

"The Green Party is proud to support the Agnew family in campaigning for stiffer sentences for those inflicting animal cruelty."
