Belfast Boxer Wins Gold At World Championships In Doha

Belfast boxer Michael Conlon won gold at the AIBA World Amateur Boxing Championships in Doha.

Michael defeated Murodjon Akhmadaliev of Uzbekistan and adds the World Amateur bantamweight title to the European Elite and Commonwealth titles he already holds.

Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín said: "I am absolutely delighted that, yet again, Michael Conlan has secured a gold medal, this time at World level, the first Irish male to do so. This is the latest in a succession of titles for Michael since the Commonwealth Games last year and it sets him up fantastically for the Olympics in Rio next year.

"Michael is truly one of our greatest current sports people and at the very top of his game. He is a credit to his club, his family and to the whole community."

£12m SPACE Campus Opens In Co Down

A new £12 million SPACE campus at South East Regional College in Bangor, Co Down, has officially opened.

The new 3,650 m² facility, funded by the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL), provides high specification accommodation for the Schools of Manufacturing and Electrical Engineering, Computer and Software Engineering and Performing and Creative Arts. The heart of the Performing Arts Centre is the theatre around which rehearsal and production studios are located. The theatre has all the attributes of a professional auditorium and in addition to being suitable for staging professional productions it provides first class rehearsal, recording and performance facilities for the students of Bangor and the surrounding area.

The Technology Innovation Centre provides a business quality learning environment that further enhances the College’s existing capacity for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology and Engineering sciences. The focus of the Technology Centre will be on; employability skills; stimulating enterprise through business incubation; delivery of innovative business development programmes; and fostering enhanced approaches to economic development, working closely with community partners.

Alliance Cllr Helps Local Businesses

Alliance MLA Judith Cochrane has helped give local businesses a step up the ladder with an event giving them direct access to Ministers and Government agencies.

The Business Support Clinic, held at the City Hall, provided an opportunity for companies to hear first-hand from other entrepreneurs on their experiences and knowledge about how to be successful in the current marketplace.

East Belfast MLA Mrs Cochrane, said: "Alliance is dedicated to assisting local businesses in any way we can. Today's event was another way in which practical help was given, with many organisations availing of the chance to speak about the issues affecting them and receiving useful tips in return."

Security Alert In Cookstown Ends
A security alert in Cookstown has now ended. The army bomb squad examined a suspicious object at Beechway on Sunday, 11 April, however "nothing untoward" was found. PSNI Inspector Michael Patton added: "It is believed the object may be a remnant from the First World War.

1,000 jobs to be created in Belfast
Around 1,000 jobs are to be created in Belfast, it has been announced. Indian company, ICICI OneSource, one of the country's largest business processing outsourcing (BPO) firms, is to open a call centre in the city, creating over 1,000 jobs over the next two-years.

Devenish Opens Manufacturing Facility In Mexico
Belfast-based Devenish has announced that it has established a new manufacturing facility in Hermosillo, Mexico, as part of the firms strategic growth plans. The new location will host the animal nutrition company's Mexico corporate headquarters, and a two-line premix production system.

Finance Minister Simon Hamilton is encouraging Northern Ireland business owners to book a place at an upcoming Google 'Juice Bar' event. The free event will take place on 26 November 2014 at the Ulster University Business School, in partnership with the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
