Viable Explosive Type Device Discovered During Security Alert
A 'viable explosive type device' has been discovered during a security alert in north Belfast.
The alert in the Linden Gardens area is ongoing and residents remain out of their homes.
SDLP north Belfast Councillor Nichola Mallon said it was a reckless attempt to kill that could have had devastating consequences.
Councillor Mallon said: "Once again North Belfast residents have been forced from their homes by those with no regard for life; be it the families who live locally or the many children attending Naíscoil Bheann Mhadagáin and Cliftonville Integrated Primary school nearby.
"There is no justification for this callous attempt to kill. I would appeal for anyone with information to bring it forward and help bring those responsible to justice."
Detective Chief Inspector Richard Campbell said: "At this stage police believe that this could have been an under-car booby-trap which was designed to kill or maim.
"ATO carried out a controlled explosion and the device has been taken away for further forensic examination.
"I utterly condemn this incident. Those responsible have no qualms about putting people's lives at risk and causing disruption to the community. There is no doubt that this device had the potential to cause serious injury or death."
"I would appeal to anyone who has information in relation to this incident to contact Police on the non-emergency number 101. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Residents Evacuated In North Belfast Alert
Residents have been forced to evacuate their homes in north Belfast following a report of a suspicious object in the area. The homes in Clifton Crescent were evacuated after the report of an object in the area on Monday afternoon. An army bomb squad has been tasked to the scene and the area has been closed to traffic.

The East Belfast Alliance MP Naomi Long has condemned those behind an incendiary device found near the Oval football ground in the east of the city earlier. Local people have now returned to their homes having been evacuated due to a fresh security alert in east Belfast earlier today.

Security Alert In North Belfast
A viable device has been found during a security alert in north Belfast. The PSNI said officers were sent to Spamount Street in the New Lodge area on Wednesday morning after a suspicious object was found. An army bomb squad arrived of the scene and confirmed it was 'viable'. The alert ended at around 13:30.

A pipe bomb may have been thrown at PSNI officers in north Belfast, it has been revealed. The announcement follows the discovery of the device during a security alert on the Whitewell Road on Wednesday night. The viable device was located close to commercial premises and led to a number of homes being evacuated at about 23:00 on Wednesday evening.
