Around 70 Youths Attack Police In L'Derry

Approximately 100 youths have attacked police officers in L'Derry.

The officers were attacked with paint bombs, stones and bottles in the Shantallow area on Thursday night.

The thugs blocked a road with burning pallets and tyres and ripped traffic islands off the ground.

The windscreen of a police vehicle was also smashed.

The attack happened when police were searching a house in Altcar Park.

No-one was injured in the incident.

SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney said: "The scenes of destruction on the streets of Galliagh last night were a disgrace. Crowds of up to 70 young people ran riot and absolutely wrecked the place, including smashing the windows of a primary school.

"Local residents were absolutely terrified in their homes as they could only watch as their community was destroyed. That is absolutely unacceptable and there's a real fear that the disorder could spread into tonight.

"What's needed now is calm. I would appeal to those involved in the disorder last night to show some respect for the community that they live in and the facilities that we all share. I would also ask parents to talk to their children about this and explain to them that their actions are leaving vulnerable residents afraid in their homes."
