MMV Ostrea Salvaged From River Foyle

MMV Ostrea has been salvaged from the River Foyle in Co L'Derry.

The Loughs Agency research vessel sank at its moorings on the River Foyle on 15 December 2015.

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan welcomed the news.

He said: "This is great news that the MMV Ostrea has been successfully salvaged from the River Foyle. I congratulate all involved in this complex operation. This was a very difficult task given the size of the boat. It was a dangerous operation for all of the Agencies involved.

"We owe a deep gratitude to those prepared to go into the murky depths on our behalf. Indeed there was tremendous teamwork from a number of different agencies who assisted in bringing about an effective salvage operation while preventing the escape of harmful fuel oil into the Foyle."

Two Convicted Of Benefit Fraud

Two women have been convicted for claiming benefits they were not entitled to at Downpatrick Magistrates' Court.

Cushla Flynn claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £3,498 while failing to declare employment. She was fined £500, ordered to pay and offenders levy of £15 and court costs of £43.

She is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Nikita Quinn claimed Carers Allowance totalling £116 while failing to declare she was working abroad. She was given a 12 month conditional discharge.

Ms Quinn has repaid in full all money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Work Starts On New Cycle Routes In Belfast

Construction work has started on three new cycle routes in Belfast.

The routes are at Alfred Street from Ormeau Avenue to Chichester Street; Durham Street and College Street North from Grosvenor Road to College Avenue and College Street and Queen Street from College Avenue to Castle Street.

Transport Minister Michelle McIlveen, said: "These routes will provide greater protection for people who choose to make journeys across the city by bike. In addition to supporting the successful Belfast Bike Share Scheme they will also help more commuters gain confidence to use the bicycle as an alternative and sustainable mode of transport."

The work is to be completed in March this year.
