Co Armagh Farmers Fined For Pollution Offence

Two Co Armagh farmers have been fined for a pollution offence at Armagh Magistrates' Court.

Mr Samuel Gilmore and Mr Brian Gilmore, from Shanecracken Road, Tandragee, were fined £750 for making a polluting discharge to a waterway.

On 25 June 2014 Water Quality Inspectors acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) inspected the Cusher River at Shanecracken Road and observed fungus growing on the bed of the waterway.

A strong odour of silage effluent was detected from the waterway. The inspectors discovered a dark coloured liquid discharging to the waterway.

The pollution was caused by silage effluent which had leaked from the silage clamp which resulted in the effluent entering the waterway below the farm causing it to be visibly polluted for a distance of more than 800 meters. The source of the pollution was traced to farm premises owned by Mr Samuel Gilmore and Mr Brian Gilmore.

A sample taken at the time of the incident confirmed that the discharges contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway.

Vandals Damage Lagan Search and Rescue Lifeboat

Justice Minister David Ford has praised the public for its support in funding repairs to Lagan Search and Rescue Lifeboat which was damaged by vandals.

The Minister was speaking during a visit to the Belfast headquarters of Lagan Search and Rescue where the lifeboat was put out of operation after a recent attack by vandals.

Minister Ford said: "This was a destructive act which endangered lives. But I have been very heartened by the overwhelming public response to Lagan Search and Rescue's innovative idea to fund the repairs.

"Donations received from the public surpassed the amount required and I am delighted to learn that the lifeboat will be back in operation after repairs are completed in the coming weeks."
