National Construction College Scotland Launches New Apprenticeship
The Scottish construction industry's need for a dramatic improvement in its health and safety record has led to the development of a new training course.
The Occupational Health and Safety SVQ Level 3 has been developed by the National Construction College Scotland – the training division of the CITB Construction Skills.
The new course, which is targeted at young people aged 17-23 years old, was launched during National Construction Week, and it is hoped that a pilot of the course will be run at the National Construction College Scotland, based in Glasgow, early next year.
To be known as the Construction Safety Technicial Modern Apprenticeship, the two-year course and subsequent SVQ Level 3 qualification is the first of its kind in the industry and aims to produce the future construction health and safety advisers.
Manager of the National Construction College Scotland, Bill Donnelly, said: "Scotland's figures for fatal construction accidents and ill health are higher than Great Britain as a whole – and they are increasing. Statistics show that the accident rate in Scotland increased by 14% in 2002/2003 compared with a drop of 11% in Great Britain. This is a shocking fact and the development of this course was in response to this."

Historic Scotland stonemasons travelled to the United States recently to help train young people in Harlem, New York. Kenny McCaffrey from Cupar and Malcolm Hutcheon from Insch worked with young people learning masonry and preservation skills through the Abyssinian Development Corporation (ADC).
