Thousands Of Workers Set For Wage Increase
The National Living Wage (NLW) which takes effect from today, 01 April, will see tens of thousands of workers in Northern Ireland receive a pay increase.
All workers aged 25 and over are now legally entitled to at least £7.20 per hour, a rise from £6.70.
According to the Nevin Economic Research Institute (NERI) the new minimum wage rate will amount to an automatic increase of 50p per hour for the coming financial year, and it is set to rise to £9 per hour by 2020. Overall 13% of workers in Northern Ireland would see an automatic increase in pay from today. However the lower age limit of 25 will exclude around 50,000 workers who will remain on the current minimum wage of £6.70 per hour until November. It also does not take into account those who are currently paid above £7.20 per hour who may see a knock-on increase in their wages.

Minimum wage rises to £5.05 from Saturday
The increase in the National Minimum Wage will guarantee a small pay rise to more than 1.3 million workers from Saturday 1st October. The adult rate will increase from £4.85 to £5.05 per hour, while the youth rate, paid to 18-21 year-olds, will go up from £4.10 per hour to £4.25.

The government has announced a 19p increase in the national minimum wage, bring it up to £6.50 per hour. The new will come into effect in October following a recommendation by the Low Pay Commission for a 3% rise. Alongside this the rate for 18 to 20-year-olds will be increased by 2%, going up by 10p to £5.13 an hour.
