Bus drivers vote to accept pay deal

Northern Ireland bus drivers voted yesterday to accept an improved pay offer of 5.7%.

Bus drivers had put the threat of further stoppages on hold, while representatives from the two main unions, the Transport and General Workers' Union and the GMB, held talks with Translink managers.

The row over pay broke out because drivers were seeking an improved basic pay package due to the EU working time directive which would have prevented drivers from using overtime to increase their take home pay.

Citybus and Ulsterbus drivers, who supplement their basic salary of around £13,000 with overtime, held a 24-hour stoppage on Friday October 17.

Translink Chief Executive Keith Moffatt said that he was pleased with the outcome of the ballot.

Union representatives, who are expected to hold further talks with Translink next week, said that the pay offer represented a first step towards securing an adequate wage.
