Security Alert 'An Elaborate Hoax'

A security alert in Lurgan has been declared an elaborate hoax by police.

A suspicious object was found at Allenhill Park, and resulted in a nearby public park being closed for a majority of Sunday, 12 February. The object was declared a hoax by army bomb experts and has been taken away for further forensic examination.

Chief Inspector John Burns said: "We regret that the public park has been closed all day on a Sunday due to the security operation in the area today.

"We understand the frustration felt by the users of the park but the police response was necessary to ensure the safety of all.

"The responsibility for the disruption caused is with those who left the device in the area and I would ask anyone with any information to contact detectives in Lurgan on 101."

Woman Dies Following Two-Car Collision

A 74-year-old woman has died following a road traffic collision near Castledawson, Co L'Derry.

Police said Alice Smylie, who was from the Ballymena area, died in the crash on the Hillhead Road shortly after 10.40am on Saturday, 11 February.

Three men were taken to hospital but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The crash happened near the Creagh Road and involved a red Kia Soul and a black Mazda.

Police have appealed for information.

Resurfacing Scheme To Commence In Larne

A £200,000 resurfacing scheme is to commence on the C37 Lower Ballyboley Road, Larne next week.

The work will begin on Monday, 20 February and is expected to last for be completed by Friday, 03 March.

The resurfacing scheme, on the C37 Lower Ballyboley Road from the C37 Moss Road to the UR56 Lismenary Road, will provide 3.1km of new road surface and will strengthen the Lower Ballyboley Road which was affected by increased traffic volumes during the construction of the recent A8 Belfast Road dualling project.

To protect the safety of road users and contractors on this part of the road network it is necessary to close the road. Diversion routes will be in place and sign posted for motorists.
