Five People Charged Over Arson Attacks On PSNI Officers Homes

Five people have been charged in connection with a number of arson attacks on police officers homes between April and July last year.

The incidents happened in the Banbridge, Portadown and Gilford areas.

A number of homes and vehicles were attacked, however no one was injured.

Four men, aged 17, 20, 36 and 51, and a woman, aged 21, have been charged with a number of offences including conspiracy to commit arson, conspiracy to cause an explosion and a number of drug-related offences.

The suspects are to appear at Craigavon Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 22 February.

Nine people were arrested by police as part of the investigation on Tuesday, 21 February.

Two women have been charged with drugs offences and are due to appear in court in March.

Two men have been detained by the police.

Mr Doug Beattie, Ulster Unionist Assembly candidate for Upper Bann, said: "The public will be shocked to learn that the homes and vehicles of Police officers in Gilford, Banbridge and Portadown were subject to arson attacks between April and July last year.

"Obviously legal proceedings are ongoing, so I will not comment on the details of the case, save to say that it is a reminder of the very real risks faced by the PSNI both on and off duty, and that these risks are shared by the families of officers.

"All too often policing involves officers placing themselves in harm’s way in order to protect society from criminal elements. We all owe the Police a debt of gratitude for the difficult job that they do and we should never forget that."
