Human Remains Found In Search For Seamus Ruddy

Human remains have been found during a search for the body of one of Northern Ireland's Disappeared in northern France.

Seamus Ruddy, 32, was abducted and killed by the INLA in 1985. He was secretly buried in Paris.

The discovery was made by the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains (ICLVR) team who launched a fresh search at a forest in Pont-de-l’Arche on 02 May.

In a statement the ICLVR said formal identification is to take place.

SDLP Assembly Member for Newry and Armagh Justin McNulty MLA said: "Thirty two years ago this Tuesday Séamus was abducted, murdered and then secretly buried. Now the Ruddy family can bring Séamus home and hopefully find some peace in closure.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ruddy family today, as with all those families who lost loved ones in the troubles."

Alliance Newry and Armagh Westminster candidate Jackie Coade said: "If these remains are indeed identified as Seamus Ruddy, then I hope it will bring some peace to his loved ones.

"They will be able to give him a proper burial and mourn in order to bring them the closure they need.

"The issue of the Disappeared is one of the most shameful aspects of the Troubles. We must not forget several families continue to suffer without the knowledge of the whereabouts of their loved ones' remains.

"I would encourage in the strongest terms anyone with information regarding the location of any of the bodies of the Disappeared to get in touch with the police or the Independent Commission."
