Woman found dead following house fire

A body of a woman in her 50's was discovered by firefighters after a blaze swept through her terraced home in Co Down last night.

The woman, whose name has not yet been released, was found by firefighters in the living room of the house on the Donaghadee Road in Newtownards.

A passing motorist is believed to have notified the Fire Service who arrived on the scene within five minutes.

Station Officer Philip Martin said firefighters were hampered by thick smoke and did not know there was anybody inside when they arrived.

The cause of the fire is still not known.

A postmortem is expected to be carried out later today.
