Economic initiative aims to 'Advance Ards' area

Ards Business Centre is initiating a new programme called ‘Advance Ards’, which aims to promote and develop the social economy in the Borough.

The programme, which incorporates a Project Officer with the responsibility for working with the community at large, aims to promote community interest, encourage new entrants, and working partnerships with voluntary, community and private sector organisations.

Commenting on the initiative, Programme Manager Lisa Cunningham said: “Continuous Grants for community groups aren’t a viable long-term solution. In order to survive and continue to provide valuable services Community Groups must become self-supporting.

"We know that there are a number of people in the Borough who have suitable business, managerial and skills and experience. We hope that these experts might have a little time on their hands with which to give something back to their local community.”

The Advance Ards programme is part of the Local Development Strategy funded by the European Programme for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland.

The foundation programme will offer tailored training and support to individuals and groups in enterprise awareness with the objective that people will be trained and skilled to support local community initiatives/projects.

A launch of the programme is scheduled to take place on the 14th of January, 7.00pm-9.00pm in the Strangford Arms Hotel in Newtownards for those interested in finding out more about the programme.
