Man Dies After Collapsing During Belfast Marathon

A man, aged in his 50s, has died after he collapsed during the Belfast Marathon on Monday, 07 May.

The victim collapsed on the course at 9.55am, five miles into the race.

Two ambulances were dispatched and the man was immediately taken to Royal Victoria Hospital, where he died a short time later.

It is understood that the it was man's first marathon, but that he had been a regular runner.

The organisers of the Belfast Marathon are assisting the man's family and have requested privacy on their behalf.

Speaking to the BBC, Former Belfast Lord Mayor Alderman Brian Kingston said that the man's death was "terrible news, very sad news indeed".

He said: "It's a day all about fitness, achievement, about people wanting to push themselves that bit extra, to achieve a great physical feat.

"That a man has died is the worst possible news."

It is understood that the man's death is the first fatality at the race in nearly 30 years.

Organisers of the Belfast City Marathon have took the decision to postpone the race and following half marathon fixture in light of the coronavirus outbreak. The marathon, originally due to take place on Sunday 03 May, will now be held on Sunday 20 September 2020.

Man Arrested In Connection With Dromara Assault
A 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a report of an assault at licenced premises at the Rathfriland Road area of Dromara. Detective Inspector Bell said: "Shortly before 10:10pm on Friday 15th December, it was reported that an altercation occurred at a bar in the area following three men refused entry to the premises.

Man Released On Bail Over Lurgan Murder
A man arrested in connection with a murder in Lurgan on Sunday, 06 August, has been released on bail pending further enquiries. The body of a man, aged 45, was discovered at a flat on Victoria Street. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Man Shot In County Down
A 28-year-old man has been shot in the leg in a gun attack in County Down. The man was getting out of his car at the Quays in Killyleagh at about 1.00am on Wednesday morning when a man approached him and shot him. The man is recovering in hospital where his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
