Inga Maria Murder: 61-Year-Old Released On Bail

A man arrested in connection with the murder of teenage backpacker Inga Maria has been released on bail.

Two men – aged 61 and 58 – were arrested in the Loughguile area on Monday, 21 May.

Inga, 18 and from Germany, went missing after she arrived in Larne, County Antrim, on a ferry from Scotland on 06 April 1988.

The teenager's body was found in a remote part of Ballypatrick Forest, near Ballycastle, two weeks later. She is said to have been the victim of a "vicious and ruthless assault".

The arrests followed a renewed appeal for information last month on the 30th anniversary of the murder. On 01 May, police revealed that new DNA evidence had been discovered during their investigation.

Detective Chief Superintendent Raymond Murray said: "If there are any witnesses still out there with any further information which might help police then I would ask them to come forward now and speak to detectives.

"Even if there are people who know what happened but have stayed silent out of friendship or family loyalty, it is still not too late to come forward and tell us what you know.

"Failure to do so can be a criminal offence in itself and surely it would be better to come to police and discuss what happened rather than take the risk we will come to you.

"If you have information call 101 and ask to speak to Serious Crime Branch detectives in Maydown."
