NI Could Experience 'Electricity Blackouts' In No-Deal Brexit

Northern Ireland could experience electricity blackouts in a no-deal Brexit, government officials have reportedly warned.

According to reports, officials are "preparing a 'no deal' notice" on the risks to the all-island Single Electricity Market (SEM).

It had previously been thought that there was no real threat to the SEM as a result of Brexit, however, it is now claimed that the NI market could experience price increases and supply shortages.

SEM is a bilateral agreement between the UK and Ireland established in 2007 to create a single energy market across Ireland. The SEM does not directly involved the EU, however, the agreement is said to be "underpinned" by each country's membership of the Internal Energy Market (IEM) – which all EU countries are part of.

New reports suggest that in order for the SEM to continue unaffected, the UK would need to remain part of the IEM, but a no-deal Brexit – in which the UK leaves the EU without any ongoing agreements – would be the single Irish energy market at risk, "leaving an insecure, isolated NI market", according to a report by the BBC.

A formal "no deal notice" on the SEM is expected to be published "in the next few weeks".
