Woman Threatened With Sledgehammer In Armed Robbery

A female member of staff has been left shaken after she was pushed to the ground and threatened with a sledgehammer in an armed robbery in Belfast.

Police are appealing for information following the incident at a petrol station on York Street on Thursday evening, 11 October.

Two males, one armed with a sledgehammer, entered the shop and jumped over the counter, opened a till and took a sum of money.

They then both made off on foot towards the New Lodge area of the city.

Detective Sergeant Maguire said: "They are described as being in their mid-twenties, medium build and wearing scarves around their faces.

"One female member of staff was pushed to the ground and threatened by the male armed with the small sledgehammer. Another female member of staff was left badly shaken as a result of the incident. Enquiries are ongoing."

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on non-emergency line 101 quoting reference number 1249 of 11 October.

Family escape hostage ordeal
A north Belfast bank official’s family who were held hostage last night managed to break free after being held for 12 hours, it has been revealed. The armed men had kidnapped them on Tuesday evening, and ransom demands were issued the next day. However, no money was handed over and police said the family are now safe and well.
