SDLP MLA Slams Jeremy Corbyn Over Failed Brexit Leadership

An SDLP MLA has branded Jeremy Corbyn's Labour leadership a failure after he rejected the idea of a second referendum on Brexit.

Claire Hanna, who represents south Belfast, made the comments after Mr Corbyn gave an interview with German newspaper Der Spiegel in which he said "we can't stop Brexit".

The MLA, who is the SDLP'S Brexit spokesperson, said it was a "crushing failure" from the Labour leader in a post on Twitter.

"Brexit can be stopped, should be, and would be if he wasn't so vacuous and indulged by so many otherwise reasonable people.

"His (very appealing) manifesto is completely undeliverable in a post-Brexit economy."

Mrs Hanna also addressed the issue while speaking on the Nolan Show, and said while the primary responsibility for Brexit lies with the Conservatives, the Labour leader should have "kept his options open" and backed a second referendum on any Brexit deal negotiated by Prime Minister Theresa May.

"Like a lot of the Labour membership, I am bitterly disappointed in this leadership's response," she said.

"We have met with Jeremy Corbyn and we have said directly to him, in face to face meetings, that his policy is damaging and the continuation of uncertainty here is damaging."
