New Belfast Walkway To Reduce Primark Safety Cordon

A new walkway will open opposite Primark's burnt-out Bank Buildings next week, to reestablish public access to Belfast City Centre.

The 35-metre pedestrian passage will open on Monday 03 December and link Royal Avenue to Donegall Place, allowing eight retailers within the cordon to get back to business in the coming weeks, including McDonalds, Skechers and Argento.

Large shipping containers will protect the enclosed walkway, as Joe O'Connor, who is overseeing Primark's restoration project, said the building is "basically hanging in the breeze".

The popular clothing store is gearing up to begin trading again on Saturday 08 December in Commonwealth House.

Aodhán Connolly, Director of Northern Ireland Retail Consortium, praised the development and encouraged the public to support the city centre.

He said: "Great news in Belfast that Primark will be opening soon but also that eight out of the 14 affected businesses will get to their premises now the tunnel is being finished.

"Now more than ever these traders need you to show your support by shopping there!"
