Irish attitudes to UK improving says survey

A new report has found that attitudes towards British people by the Irish, is improving.

The report, 'Through Irish Eyes' by the British Council in Ireland and the British Embassy in Dublin, found that around 75% of Irish people feel they know the UK well and that 85% have friends or family living there.

It also found that 74% believed the UK punches above its weight on the international stage.

In relation to Northern Ireland, 24% believe co-operation between the governments is working well, with only 17% believing that there is a lot of room for improvement.

While 68% are in favour of the concept of a United Ireland, only 36% believe this will be achieved, and only 25% of those see the possibility of a United Ireland within the next decade.

Looking further afield, the survey found that 75% of people feel more affiliation with America than Europe.

Around 85% of respondents believe Ireland acts constructively in Europe, while only 60% believe this is true of the UK. Some respondents also believe the UK's attempts to stay close to both the US and Europe are a sign of weakness.
