'Stranger Danger' Warning After Primary School Pupil Approached

The PSNI is encouraging parents to teach their children about the dangers of unknown strangers, after a primary school pupil was approached in Lurgan this morning.

The P7 girl was walking to school along Upper Toberhewney Lane on Tuesday 05 March when a grey van drove up alongside her and the driver asked if she wanted a lift.

"The girl did the right thing and declined and walked on," a police spokesperson said.

The van persisted, driving beside the girl and offering sweets and a lift to school. Only when a friend phoned the pupil prompting her to produce her phone did the van drive off.

The pupil headed straight to school and informed her teacher immediately.

A police officer issued a warning to pupils, urging them to:

• Never go with a stranger

• Never accept gifts or sweets from an unknown person

• Always tell an adult if a stranger tries to make you go with them or offers you gifts.

"Take the opportunity, have the conversation with your kids now," the spokesperson added.

"We will actively patrol the area in the coming days. Parents please be vigilant and warn your children of the dangers of strangers."
