New tourism super-body needed says USCA
The Ulster Society of Chartered Accountants (USCA) has called for tourism to become a focus of economic effort through the creation of a new ‘tourism super-body’.
The USCA made the call in response to the government's Tourism in Northern Ireland Consultation document, A Strategic framework for Action 2004-2007.
The Society said the new body would co-ordinate the competing roles of the tourism interests of government departments and district councils.
However, the USCA questioned whether the tourist board would be sufficiently empowered to implement the framework document given the complexity of interests which drive and benefit from tourism visitors.
John Hannaway, Ulster Society Chairman said: “The Government’s framework document rightly identifies the potential of our local tourism industry. It will take time and investment to realise this potential but there is every possibility that tourism can make a significant impact on the Northern Ireland economy by raising its GDP contribution from two to at least six per cent.”
The Ulster Society of Chartered Accountants represents some 2,200 chartered accountants working in practice, in industry, in the voluntary sector and in most parts of the public sector.

Both an advance - and a more backward step - in tourism matters were highlighted yesterday as two politicians spoke out on making the most of visitor numbers.
