L'Derry Pipe Bomb Probed As Sectarian Hate Crime
Detectives probing an explosion outside a house in L'Derry on Tuesday night have confirmed the device was a pipe bomb and is being investigated as a possible sectarian hate crime.
A loud bang was reported at around 10.50pm in the Bonds Place area of the Waterside, causing police and ATO to rush to the scene and evacuate the area.
"Police suspect this was a pipe bomb-type device," Detective Inspector Jack confirmed on Wednesday.
"Our officers remained at the scene this morning as we continue with our enquiries into this reckless act. We are following a number of lines of enquiry, including that this was a sectarian hate crime.
"While damage was caused to a property, thankfully, no one in the property at the time was injured.
"However, what occurred in the Bonds Place area last night could have had extremely serious consequences and we could have been dealing with serious injury, or worse today.
"I want to take this opportunity to appeal to anyone who was in the area last night around 10:45pm-10:50pm and saw any suspicious activity, or has information which may assist our investigation, to contact detectives at Strand Road on 101, quoting reference number 2093 of 03/09/19."
Causeway Mayor Promotes Organ Donation Conservation
As Organ Donation Week continues, the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has added to the plea for people to speak to their family members about organ donation.
A recent survey found that while 84% agreed it was important to let those closest to them know their views on organ donation, only 40% had shared their decision with their family or partner.
Councillor Sean Bateson recently met with local Organ Donation Specialist Nurse Mary McAfee to hear more about the importance of organ donation and show his support for the awareness-raising initiative.
Following the meeting, the Sinn Fein Mayor said: "Our healthcare professionals are there to support those people waiting on a transplant, as well as families who find themselves facing a decision about organ donation following the death of relative. By letting your family know that you want to be an organ donor then you could help to save the life of someone's mother or father, son or daughter. During Organ Donation Week, make sure you have this vital conversation so that your wishes can be fulfilled and your family know they are doing the right thing for you."
Mary McAfee, who works in Coleraine's Causeway Hospital added: "Through my work I witness at first hand the positive impact of organ donation. One of its biggest rewards is the belief that you are giving bereaved families something good to focus on after the death of a loved one, and knowing that they are contributing to saving lives through the gift of donation.
"In the UK three people die each day waiting on an organ transplant. Here in Northern Ireland 9 people died last year waiting on a lifesaving transplant. Locally there are approximately 200 people waiting on a life-saving transplant. Only 47% of the population here have registered their wish to be a donor on the NHS Organ Donor Register. We need more organ donors so that everyone who needs a transplant may have one."
Police Issue Debit Card Scam Warning
Police in County Tyrone are calling for vigilance when it comes to banking and accounts after an individual was fooled into a scam involving pre-paid debit cards.
An officer for PSNI Strabane explained: "A person claiming to be from Customer Services for a debit company has phoned the victim to say suspicious activity has taken place on their account. As a result the card company has sent out a code which the victim has subsequently given to the person alleging to be from customer services. It has transpired hours later that a substantial amount of money has been withdrawn from the account.
"Please remember there are reputable banks/companies - however remember they will never request personal information from you such as passcodes etc."
Police said the local neighbourhood policing teams can offer advice and potentially stop fraud in the process, if contacted in time. Further information on how to protect your assets can be found here.

Northern Ireland has seen an increase of 81.8% in deceased organ donors over the last five years. The news comes as the NHS confirms it has achieved its target of a 50% increase for the whole of the UK, as laid out in the Organ Donation Taskforce in 2008.
