Join NHS to 'make a difference' campaign urges
The Department of Health has launched a £4 million advertising campaign to encourage more people and returners to join the NHS.
Following the 'Join the team and make a difference' theme, the 2004 NHS Careers campaign follows on from last year's 'Smile' campaign, which resulted in over 80,000 contacts made to the national NHS Careers helpline during the main campaign period. Since its beginnings in 2000, the NHS Careers service has played a large part in growing the nursing workforce by over 50,000.
Health Secretary John Reid said: "We are confident that this new campaign will be as successful as previous years and that it will attract interest from new staff into a range of different careers as well as encourage ex-healthcare professionals to return to the NHS.
"Year on year, we have seen consistent increases in the numbers of new staff joining the NHS, those taking up university places to study for a healthcare profession, as well as returners to nursing, midwifery, radiography and other career groups. We now have over 55,000 more nurses and almost 14,000 more doctors compared to 1997."
BMA chairman Mr James Johnson added: "More doctors and nurses mean a better service for patients and I hope this campaign gets people interested in careers in the NHS. Together with measures to encourage staff to stay in the NHS, recruitment drives are essential if we are to boost the medical workforce."
A new television advertisement will run for six weeks and is aimed at recruiting into all careers within the NHS.
