Murder victim had no link to loyalist feud, court hears

A man killed almost two years ago at the height of an internal loyalist feud had no connection with that dispute.

This is according to a police detective who confirmed the news to the defence solicitor of two men who appeared in court today charged with the murder of 22-year-old Alexander McKinley in October 2002.

The men, Barry Skinner, 23, from Euston Street in Belfast, and Richard David McCartan, 27, whose address was given as care of Maghaberry Prison, denied murdering Mr McKinley during an appearance at Belfast Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

It was revealed during today's court appearance that both men where questioned soon after the murder but released without charge.

However, they were re-arrested this week following new evidence based on "telephonic communications".

Mr McKinlay was shot in the head as he sat in a car on the Woodstock Road on October 2002. He later died in hospital.

At the time of the murder police linked the shooting to the bloody loyalist feud between the Portadown-based LVF and the UDA at the time.

Mr McKinley was believed to have been a relative of a senior UDA figure in east Belfast.

The two defendants were remanded in custody until March 31.
