Elderly woman hospitalised following break-in
An elderly woman has been treated in hospital for shock following a break-in at her home in Belfast.
Three masked men broke into the 95-year-old woman's home at Orby Drive in east Belfast at around 9.30pm on Thursday.
Although the woman confronted the robbers, she was in such a state of distress following the incident that she was taken to hospital.
It is understood that the men made off with a sum of money.
East Belfast UUP MLA Michael Copeland this morning branded the robbery as "despicable".
Mr Copeland said: “This stomach turning attack on a pensioner is a despicable act. There are, unfortunately, a number of groups of robbers who see the elderly and most vulnerable as rich pickings. These people are the dregs of society and need to be caught quickly.
“I would echo the PSNI in Strandtown’s call for people with information to come forward. In addition I would call on people who have elderly neighbours or family to keep an eye on them, to go and talk to them and to make them aware of the precautions that they can take.”
Elsewhere in County Armagh on the Portadown Road a woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries following an armed robbery.
Two armed men entered an office, assaulted a woman, and confronted her boss during the course of the robbery. They then made off with an undisclosed sum of money.
Police have since arrested a man and recovered a blank-firing weapon following a car crash in the area.
