Man Seriously Assaulted In West Belfast

Detectives are appealing for information after a man was assaulted in west Belfast last week.

The victim suffered a serious eye wound when attacked in the Springfield Avenue area by an unknown male, who is believed to have been armed with a weapon, on the evening of Wednesday 12 February.

Police said the incident occurred at around 8pm and believe a knife or glass bottle was potentially used.

The victim requires a number of stitches, and may need further surgery, to what's described as a "very nasty" wound.

Enquiries are continuing and police are appealing to anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area to contact detectives on 101, quoting reference 254 of 17/02/20.

Man Arrested In Connection With 1992 Police Officer Murder
A 59-year-old man has been arrested at Birmingham Airport in connection with a fatal mortar attack in Newry in 1992. The man was arrested on Wednesday, 21 February by detectives from PSNI's Legacy Investigation Branch, investigating the murder of Constable Colleen McMurray and the attempted murder of her colleague in 1992.

Stomach Wound Killed Bar Brawl Victim
The trial of the man accused of killing Short Strand man, Robert McCartney has heard that a single stomach wound killed the victim. Belfast Crown Court heard yesterday from the Deputy State Pathologist, Dr Alistair Bentley, who conducted a post mortem on Mr McCartney in February 2005.
