Teenager attack was sectarian say family

The family of a teenager who had to undergo surgery to save part of his hand following an assault in north Belfast, have said the attack on their son was sectarian.

The incident occurred on the flashpoint Ligoniel Road on Sunday when a gang of men pulled up in a car and proceeded to beat their victim.

Such was the severity of the attack that the teenager suffered a fractured skull and has had surgery on his hand.

He was immediately taken to the Mater Hospital before being transferred to Ulster Hospital.

DUP MLA for North Belfast, Nelson McCausland expressed his concern that such attacks could escalate into further disorder.

"This was a brutal attack by people who appeared intent on inflicting serious injury on a young Protestant teenage, and it is the latest in a worrying series of attacks on individuals and homes in the Ligoniel area," Mr McCausland said.

"People should not react to this provocation as that will only hinder the police the police as they attempt to identify and deal with those responsible for these attacks."

Community workers in the area have echoed Mr McCausland's comments and called on local people to assist police in their investigation.
