Sinn Féin's Christina Black Named New Lord Mayor Of Belfast
Sinn Féin's Christina Black has been named as the new Lord Mayor of Belfast, taking over the chain of office from outgoing Lord Mayor Councillor Michael Long.
Councillor Long was in office for just three weeks, having taken over the role from Kate Nicholl when she was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in May.
Describing herself as a "hopeful community activist", Councillor Black said she was honoured to become First Citizen and was looking forward to working for communities across the city.
"I love this city. I was born and raised here in a strong working-class community and I am immensely proud to be a Bealfeirstian," said Councillor Black.
"As a community activist, I am committed to empowering local people and communities, and making sure people have a strong voice on their side. It's what inspired me to get involved in politics, and I am honoured to now be representing the city I love so much, as its First Citizen."
Councillor Black said one of her priorities for her term in office was to showcase Belfast's diversity, and support workers and families through the cost of living crisis.
She said: "I'm delighted to have this amazing opportunity. I'm passionate about this city and its people and I can't wait to get out and meet new people and find out more about the amazing work that's going on in communities right across our city. I will be Belfast's biggest ambassador and will use my time in office to keep pushing forward priorities around the inclusive regeneration of our city.
"Belfast is a confident and thriving city with enormous untapped potential to prosper further. The opportunities for our city to grow are endless and working together we can seize them. During my term I want to be a positive voice for everyone in this wonderful city."
Councillor Michelle Kelly has become the new Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast. A member of the Alliance party, Councillor Kelly represents the Titanic electoral area, and takes over from outgoing Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Tom Haire.

Initial feedback on the commercial impact of Belfast shops being open over the traditional 'Twelfth' celebration has been excellent. This year's event, titled 'Orangefest' on 13 July witnessed Belfast city centre shops opening on the day of the parades for the first time.

Homeless Woman Dies In Belfast
A homeless woman has died on the streets of Belfast. The woman is believed to have been aged in the 30s and her death is not being treated as suspicious. A post mortem is to be carried out to determine the cause of death. The woman is the fifth person to die on the city's streets in recent weeks.

Council Asked To Fly Armed Forces Flag
The Ministry of Defence has asked Belfast City Council to fly a flag for a full week to mark Armed Forces Day. But the letter has arrived too late to be discussed by the full council and in the past, there has been no consensus between political parties on whether or not to fly it. Armed Forces Day, now in its fourth year, is on Saturday June 30.

New Black Taxi Jobs Announced
Funding to create 26 new Black Taxi driver jobs has been announced by Sinn Féin Councillor Ciaran Beattie. Cllr Beattie posted the news to his Facebook, and it is understood that the funding has been secured through Belfast City Council. A jobs fair for hopeful drivers will be held at Cultúrlann on 01 February.

Life-Saving Smart Hubs Launched In Belfast City Centre
Belfast has became the first UK city to benefit from Pulse Smart Hubs - a network of potentially life-saving technology pods dotted around the city centre. The "smart street furniture", funded by the Urban Innovation Company, was launched on Tuesday 19 February by the firm's CEO Patrick Fisher and Lord Mayor Councillor Deirdre Hargey.
