Licensing proposals for arenas laid at Westminster

New legislation that will allow indoor arenas to apply for a licence to sell alcohol has been laid at Westminster.

Social Development Minister, John Spellar said the proposed Order would enable large indoor arenas such as the Odyssey Arena to apply for such a licence.

At present the Odyssey Arena relies on the discretion of the court to grant occasional licences permitting alcohol to be sold at events.

Subject to Parliamentary approval, it is expected that the Order could become law later this year.

The legislation regulating the sale and consumption of intoxicating liquor in Northern Ireland is contained in the Licensing (Northern Ireland) Order 1996.
