Spellar announces roll-out of lock out crime scheme
Criminal Justice Minister John Spellar has confirmed that the Government's Lock Out Crime (LOC) scheme is to be rolled out across Northern Ireland, following a successful pilot project in five district wards areas.
The LOC scheme provides home security devices for those over 75 years living in high crime areas and in receipt of specific benefits.
Announcing the extension of the initiative, Mr Spellar said: "The expansion of this scheme means that eligible older people in district ward areas across Northern Ireland will benefit from free security enhancements for their homes.
"I intend that the Lock Out Crime Scheme will extend as widely as possible across Northern Ireland and its implementation will be phased by area. I propose to roll-out the programme to urban neighbourhoods in the initial stages as most recorded crimes occur in these areas, but by the end of March 2005, LOC will be present in 359 of the 582 wards across Northern Ireland."
The LOC Scheme, which is costing approximately £2.25 million, is part of the Government's Stay Safe Stay Secure campaign that aims to help older people to feel safer within the community.
