Alliance Expresses Concerns Over Recorded Rise In Hate Crimes

The Alliance Party has expressed their 'disappointment' at the recorded rise in hate crimes in Northern Ireland.

Speaking after it was revealed the latest figures show rises in sectarian, disability and transphobic hate crime, Alliance Policing Board member John Blair said it was important to remember that behind all these figures are human victims.

Blair continued: "These figures represent a lived reality for each and every person impacted. It is truly heartbreaking that so many people are not being afforded the right to live safely across Northern Ireland and this week acts as a timely reminder that we still have much more to do to overcome hate crime.

"The PSNI has been working hard to address these issues, but it is up to all of us to work within our communities to stamp out this problem.

"Going forward we must also work to ensure victims are encouraged and have the confidence to come forward and report incidents – raising public awareness of advice portals such as Victim Support led Hate Crime Advocacy Service.

"It's also another reason to see the Assembly back up and functioning, delivering on key strategies like this aimed at keeping everyone safe across Northern Ireland."
