Police escorting ballot boxes attacked in Derry

Up to 50 petrol bombs were thrown at police during disturbances at polling stations in Londonderry last night.

A number of paint bombs were also thrown during the street violence which erupted as police escorted electoral officers and ballot boxes from stations in the Ballymagroarty, Shantallow and Creagan areas of Londonderry.

One man, believed to be part of a crowd which had attacked police, was set alight when he was struck by a petrol bomb.

The flames were eventually extinguished by members of the crowd before he was removed from the area after an ambulance was called by police.

A number of police vehicles were also damaged during the disturbances including several land rovers which were struck by petrol bombs.

Elsewhere, an electoral officer was showered with glass after windows were broken at a polling station in the Carnhill area of the city.
