Communities Minister Meets With UK Sports Ministers

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has met with the UK's other Sports Ministers in Glasgow to discuss strategic priorities for sport across the UK.

Following the meeting, Minister Lyons said: "It was great to meet my counterparts from other parts of the UK and to share our vision for sport into the future. As the Minister responsible for all sport in Northern Ireland, I am keen to increase any opportunities for more people to get active and participate in a range of sports. I am particularly interested in widening the participation prospects for women and girls, and for those with disabilities, in sport across all levels."

The Inter-Ministerial Group on Sport is attended by Sports Council Chairs along with other senior officials and provides a chance to take forward areas of mutual interest. The Group were also able to take in some of the World Athletics Championships currently taking place at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow – an opportunity to watch dedicated athletes performing at the pinnacle of their sport.

Minister Lyons added: "Of particular interest was a discussion around funding for grassroots sports and I look forward to continuing the conversation with the UK Sports Minister Stuart Andrew MP as he visits Northern Ireland next week."

A £25M Sports Sustainability Fund, to help those clubs and governing bodies who have been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, will open for applications tomorrow, Communities Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has announced.

Omicron Hospitality Payment Scheme Extended
The Omicron Hospitality Payment scheme will be extended to include hotels and certain sports clubs, Finance Minister, Conor Murphy has announced. Under the scheme, following Executive agreement, hotels will be eligible for a one-off grant between £10,000 and £20,000 depending on their rateable value.

Progress Of NI's Vaccination Programme Welcomed
The Health Minister Robin Swann has welcomed the continued progress in NI's vaccination programme. The Jabbathon student jab initiative continues with walk-in clinics at university and FE college campuses. Vaccines are also to be provided at the Balmoral Show, with a walk-in clinic running every day.

Minister praises community's progress
The Social Development Minister David Hanson today visited Tigers Bay in north Belfast to review the progress made on the regeneration of the area. The Minister praised the contribution made by the local community to improving their area, which is part of the Department for Social Development’s (DSD’s) Inner North Neighbourhood Renewal area.
