Alliance Welcomes New Legal Scheme For Child Abuse Victims

Alliance Justice spokesperson Connie Egan MLA has welcomed the launch of the Children's Sexual Offences Legal Adviser (CSOLA) scheme, a new initiative designed to provide free legal advice to child victims of sexual offences.

The scheme, introduced by Justice Minister Naomi Long, will be delivered by Victim Support NI and will offer support to children aged 17 and under as they navigate the complexities of the justice system.

"Sexual offence cases are among the most distressing, and navigating the justice system can be particularly challenging for all victims, especially child victims," said Ms. Egan. "This new scheme will provide invaluable support to young people who have experienced this trauma."

She added: "It is unimaginable to think of having to endure the complexities of the justice system with little support after being victim to such a traumatic crime, and it's even more inconceivable to think of it from a child's perspective. I hope that with the introduction of the CSOLA scheme, more children and families feel comfortable to report these severe crimes, knowing they now have access to the help and support they need."

Ms. Egan praised Justice Minister Long for her commitment to creating a justice system that prioritises victims. "The success of the adult SOLA scheme reinforced the need for similar support for children," she said. "I want to thank the Justice Minister for her work in launching these vital schemes, ensuring victims receive the necessary support through one of the most traumatic experiences of their lives."

The CSOLA scheme will provide free, independent legal advice to child victims until the start of their trial.
