Nine Police Officers Injured In Series Of Assaults
Nine police officers were injured over a 48-hour period in L'Derry/Strabane, with some also subjected to racial and sectarian abuse, police have revealed.
The incidents occurred between Friday, 7th February, and Sunday, 9th February, across a range of policing operations.
"All of the injured officers remained on duty however, which is testimony to their resilience during difficult challenges they face on a daily basis, while working to keep people safe," said Area Chief Inspector Luke Moyne.
The incidents included:
• An officer being punched in the face while apprehending a man wanted for driving-related offences. • Four officers being assaulted while responding to disturbances at two separate house parties.
• Two officers being injured while responding to a large fight in Derry City, with one officer sprained her wrist and another kicked to the head.
• An officer being kicked to the head while transporting a woman to custody.
• An officer being head-butted by a man while being placed into custody.
"All of these shameful attacks on our officers will be investigated rigorously," said Chief Inspector Moyne. "Officers put themselves on the front line to keep people safe – they do not deserve to be assaulted for simply doing their job."
