Five Arrested For Drink Or Drug Driving Over Bank Holiday Weekend
Five individuals were arrested for driving while unfit over the bank holiday weekend in the Belfast area, according to police.
Belfast Superintendent Finola Dornan condemned the "unacceptable" behaviour of drivers who risk their own safety and that of others.
"As these arrests evidence, our officers will be actively seeking to arrest those who make the reckless decision to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after consuming alcohol or drugs," Superintendent Dornan stated. She reiterated that driving under the influence is one of the "Fatal Five" factors contributing to road deaths, emphasising, "Just one drink can kill."
Among the incidents, a 20-year-old man was arrested and charged after a two-vehicle collision on Nansen Street early Sunday. A 42-year-old man was charged with excess alcohol after being reported driving drunk on Clifton Street Sunday evening. Later that night, a 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving while unfit following another two-vehicle collision on Divis Street. On Monday morning, a 55-year-old man was arrested and charged on Upper Knockbreda Road for driving with no lights and excess alcohol, while a 35-year-old woman was arrested and charged on Oxford Street for erratic driving, excess alcohol, and drug possession.
All charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
