Stone-throwing youths attack police

Police have come under attack from around 200 youths following disturbances on one of Belfast's main transport routes.

Trouble began on the Westlink shortly after midnight on Sunday when a stolen car crashed and was then burnt out.

When police went to investigate, a crowd of around 200 youths descended upon them throwing stones and bottles at officers.

Police believe the crowd had come from a nearby bonfire which was lit to mark the 33rd anniversary of the introduction of internment without trial in Northern Ireland.

Police closed the road due to safety concerns but re-opened it at 7am in time for rush hour traffic.
