Maghera Town Centre to See £635,000 Resurfacing Scheme
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced a substantial £635,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme for Maghera town centre, commencing on Monday, 28 July 2025. The project will cover approximately 1.25 kilometres of roads, including parts of A29 Coleraine Road Car Park, A29 Hall Street, A42 Lower Main Street & Church Street, C551 Upper Main Street, C551 Tirkane Road, and U5322 St Lurachs Road. Initial preparatory and drainage work will involve daytime lane closures, with evening and overnight road closures expected from Monday, 18 August to Friday, 19 September 2025 (18:00 to 07:00). Minister Kimmins stated the investment would "deliver significant benefits for residents and road users," building on the recently completed Public Realm Scheme. Motorists should anticipate delays and follow diversionary routes. The work is expected to be substantially complete by Friday, 19 September 2025, subject to weather conditions.
Councillor Urges Minister to Save National Youth Choir
SDLP Newry councillor Doire Finn has appealed to Communities Minister Gordon Lyons to intervene and prevent the closure of the National Youth Choir of Northern Ireland. The choir, which has operated for 26 years, announced plans to cease operations following the loss of Arts Council funding. Councillor Finn has written to the Minister, highlighting the devastating impact the closure would have on current and past members, as well as the wider arts and cultural scene in Northern Ireland. She emphasised the choir's role in developing young people's confidence and skills, and warned against Northern Ireland becoming the only part of the UK and Ireland without a National Youth Choir.
Paul Maskey Condemns Latest 5G Mast Attack in West Belfast
Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey has called for an immediate end to attacks on 5G masts following confirmation that another mast was targeted overnight in west Belfast. The West Belfast representative described the ongoing incidents as a "coordinated campaign" that is "damaging our community, disconnecting people and putting lives at risk." Mr Maskey urged those responsible to recognise the harm they are causing and stop, while also calling on the PSNI to "step up to the mark and bring those responsible to justice." This follows a series of recent arson attacks on 5G masts across west Belfast, which have impacted mobile phone service for residents.
