Detectives investigating a serious assault in Castlewellan have made an arrest in connection with the incident.

Detective Sergeant Johnston said police received a report at approximately 2.45am on Sunday, 28 September 2025, that two males had been assaulted with a pool cue inside licensed premises in the Main Street area.

One of the victims, an 18-year-old boy, remains in hospital receiving treatment for serious head and facial injuries. The second victim was also treated at hospital before being discharged. A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He has since been released on bail to allow for further enquiries.

Police are making a specific appeal for witnesses who were inside the premises at the time of the assault to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 197 28/09/25. They are particularly keen to review any CCTV or mobile phone footage of the incident.
